10/23/12 - Building a Safe Community- Overcoming Community Resistance
This is a PowerPoint that students will incorporate in the video and their presentations.
10/24/12- Video- The contents in this video will be tested
(This is a long video, so the video will start at the beginning of class)
on Tuesday, 10/30/12, with group presentations each student must participate in each group, by speaking, note taking, or writing on the whiteboard.
Group presentations will be graded by developing 1-3, emerging, 4-6 and advanced 7-9.
The Storm-Group Exercise (Presentation Questions)
This exercise is based on previous lectures, presentations and 1 video. These presentations were assignments in mission statements in organizations, training a police department, personnel and Overcoming Community Resistance.
Each group participated in a development of an organizational Mission Statement. You had an assignment that providing understanding of your agency and or city demographics. You are aware of your agency divisions, bureau’s and their community relations strategy. Each break out group has identified an agency and has developed separate core Missions Statement.
The video was shown in a class. Your instructions are to assume the role of a Community Relations Officer. You will need to explain to the community how you will avoid such a tragedy in the future?
During your presentation and evaluation of the video, list and present with your answers to the following questions.
Each Presentation should take about 15 minutes.
Group 1-Cover in your presentation- What key stakeholders would you identify before the storm. What supplies and assistance would you ask for and what presentations would you give them? 1. Identify how you will go about developing your program for these stakeholders?
Group 2-In your presentation, explain what went wrong and Identify several key points that you found as a problem in the community?
Group 3 - In your presentation, explain what went wrong and Identify several key points that you found as a problem in the police department?
Group 4- In your presentation, explain what went wrong and Identify several key points that you found as a problem in the community’s view of the police department and government?

In response to this question, please be as comprehensive in your answer as you can by evaluating all the topics and situations we discussed from the beginning of this Community Relations course.
Across the county, attempts have been made by police departments to try and develop a community service plan that will assist residents in the case of a natural disaster. From the beginning of this course, we discussed many community service plans and explored many community relations programs.
Question:
After watching the video; What programs will you develop to prevent these communities from falling victim to any natural disaster? Your response should include information from any previous PowerPoint presentation, and any topic previously discussed.
Research/Term Paper due at the end of this course. 12/10/12
Research/Term Paper Assignment
Select a topic from a chapter we covered in this course. Identify and explain that topic, and write a research/term paper that covers the topic. You may also use your own experiences relating to the topic in order to highlight your points.
Your paper has to be complete and over 500 of your own words.
For example, if you were most interested in community corrections and wish to write about it; research communities with correctional facilities in them, and how you can distinguish them apart from regular prisons or jails. Or, if your were interested in the the Broken Windows Theory, and how it is applied in different law enforcement situations, cover a situation and identify how you approach it.
If you wish to bring your own experiences, explain how you will work in the system you presented. Your paper do not have to relate to you specifically, but personal experiences are usually easier to write about. Just relate your experience to the topic you selected.
